This coming weekend marks the start of the orienteering season for 2012. This is a very important year for racing. Not only is there the Silva Superseries and qualification for worlds to think of, but the team for the New Zealand World Cup round in early 2013 will be chosen based on this years results. Many athletes will be lifting their game to try and grab a spot in the team.
Sprint the Bay is the first race of the year. 6 sprint races in 3 days around Napier, Hastings and Havelock North. The STB team will no doubt put on an awesome weekend. It will be my first time racing STB and I am looking forward to some hard and fast racing.
The weekends races will have a very high level of coverage. Splits and radio controls live at the event center as well as online up to date results. It will be easy to follow events even if you aren’t in the Bay. Look out for the Tour de France style jersey competitions, with a green, white, polka dot and yellow classification running in mens and womens over the weekend. I will be shooting for yellow in the mens classification and hoping that my move to Hamilton hasn’t hurt my orienteering technique.
